CRUK Cambridge Genomics core - Senior Scientific Officer

    Senior Scientific Officer
    Cambridge Research Institute
    £23,250 – £38,250 pa inc

    About the Role
As Senior Scientific Officer you will be responsible for the provision of Illumina and Sanger sequencing services to Cambridge Research Institute researchers. We have three Illumina GA2x instruments and this is primarily a service role; although you may work on ad hoc research projects especially where those are heavily using Genomics core resources or involve technical development.

You will use your scientific knowledge, expertise and broad practical molecular biology skills to provide excellent sequencing services. You’ll be required to be involved in cross-training with other members of the Genomics Core to allow cover of the other genomic services as required and to offer general support for large-scale genome analysis. You will also help in importing and modifying published procedures for proof-of-principle experiments and may be involved in developing new protocols.

You will need to interact well as a member of the genomics core team, where you will have day-to-day line management responsibility for two junior staff. You will need to work well independently, prioritising your own workload, interacting with internal and external groups, producing project documentation and presenting research findings including writing and editing reports and providing help where required on preparing papers for publication.

    About You
Educated to degree level in a relevant subject or with equivalent experience, you will have extensive hands on laboratory experience in molecular biology and be experienced with Sanger DNA sequencing. You should have a thorough working knowledge of real-time PCR, microarray technologies and nucleic acid extraction methods; direct experience with some of these Genomics technologies is required. Experience with Illumina, or other, next-generation sequencing systems would be very desirable.

    About the Cambridge Research Institute
The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute (CRI) is a joint venture between Cancer Research UK and the University of Cambridge and is situated on the Addenbrooke’s Biomedical Campus in Cambridge. The aim of the Institute is to facilitate world class research which will increase our understanding of cancer and apply that understanding directly for the benefit of cancer patients in the clinic.

About the Genomics Core at CRI
Genomics is one of several core facilities at CRI that offer services to scientists in the 21 research groups. The Genomics core provides many services including; DNA sequencing, Next-Gen sequencing, microarray, real-time PCR and nucleic acid extraction and QC. There is a team of seven people providing services to over 200 scientists.

    How to Apply
Our online application process involves attaching your CV and a covering letter which should outline your interest in applying for this role and explaining how you meet the criteria as set out in the role profile. Interviews are expected to be completed during the week commencing the 8th of February and will be held at CRI.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
      by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...

From Collection to Sequencing: Why Sample Preparation and Preservation Define Sequencing Data
      by SEQadmin2

Data variability is still an issue in sequencing technologies despite the advances in reproducibility and accuracy of these platforms. But the problem does not originate in the sequencing itself, but in the previous steps, before the sample reaches the sequencer.

The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.
