Sr. Research Scientist (#A1000577)
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have one Sr. Research Scientist position available. The primary functions of this position are to implement, analyze and integrate data related to genomics research; design and develop in-house bioinformatics tools; evaluate and integrate community-developed bioinformatics tools; and provide technical support and effective communication with users. IGB and NCSA are working together to develop state-of-the art compute infrastructures for genomic research and to leverage them in support of IGB research. NCSA has been tasked with providing computational resources for the Archon Genomics X-Prize (AGXP; genomics.xprize.org), setting the standard for human genome sequence validation for the next decade.
Required Education & Training:
• MS degree in a field of science relevant to bioinformatics required (PhD degree preferred). Preferred degree fields are bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, molecular genetics or biotechnology. Alternative degree fields may be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.
• At least four years experience with the application of programming expertise to genomic data analysis and/or visualization problems and with the various types of genomic data, tools and databases.
• At least two years experience with distributed and parallel solutions (clusters, grids, clouds) for high-throughput data analysis.
• At least four years of experience with the productive use of scripting (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby) and programming (e.g. FORTRAN, C++, C#) languages.
Preferred Experience & Training:
• Experience with whole genome analysis, such as assembly and mapping and/or knowledge of variant (SNP, indel, CNV, etc) detection and gene expression analysis.
• Training in molecular genetics and knowledge of methodologies for analyzing genetic data.
• Working knowledge of statistics, with an emphasis on their application to genetics and genomics.
This is a regular academic professional position at NCSA and is a renewable 12-month, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search. Interviews may be conducted before the closing date, although no hiring decisions will be made until after the search has closed.
