Building a bioinformatics core in Chicago

I joined the NorthShore University HealthSystem in Fall of 2010. This is primarily a hospital. But it also has strong academic research. Prior to joining here I was with GenomeQuest, the cloud-based bioinformatics analysis company in Massachusetts.

My remit here at NorthShore is to build a strong bioinformatics expertise (starting from nearly 0). So, I am hiring over the next few years. I'll be posting in the Jobs forum as and when I have openings.

I also have several genome sequencing projects in oncology and neurology which will start in the next few years. I will be browsing this site for advice and guidance through the software jungle that has grown in the field.

    Welcome to the board!

Professionally, we have played a role in building a part of that bioinformatics expertise from the ground up and taking existing capacity and increasing it with existing staff.

Full disclosure: I work for a software company, and so I am an active participant in that jungle (that is a great way to put it).

Anyways, trying to remove as much bias as I can, I would be happy to be an industry resource.

Thank you for the offer. I too worked for a software company just before coming here; so I know what you mean by trying to be as unbiased as possible. If we don't do that, we lose our identity as scientists!

Anyway, as I start building my team, I just posted a job opening:

Post and look for academic, non-profit, or other non-industrial jobs here.

      Cheers!

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
          by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...
