    Sr. Research Technologist II - CORE

    Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN is seeking a Senior Research Tech II for the Medical Genome Facility (MGF) to develop new methods and protocols to support individualized medicine initiatives. The incumbent will be responsible for optimizing commercially available methods and developing novel methods to support genomics research and testing with the objective of determining if and how these should be moved into the production lab. The incumbent will also evaluate new instrumentation. The incumbent will share lab administration duties, including allocation of budget/resources. Responsibilities will include developing new and improved methods, evaluating new products and instrumentation, project and experimental planning, documentation of new protocols, evaluation of results, and presentation of results for the purpose of transferring techniques and instrumentation to production lab.

    Requires a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or relevant sciences with several years of additional graduate study; Or course work in specialty area with 8 years of research experience in a work or educational setting; Or a master’s degree in biology, chemistry or relevant sciences with 6 years of research experience in a work or educational setting. The successful candidate will also have extensive experience in advanced Molecular Biology techniques. These will include Next Generation Sequencing and library prep, automation techniques, enzymatic manipulation of DNA and RNA, PCR, and qPCR. The candidate must be able to show a history in method development. A first authorship on a scientific publication and demonstration of presentation skills is preferred.

    Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

    I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.
