We have a Bioinformatics position open at the Great Lakes Genomics Center

The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) at UWM is the only graduate school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater issues. Its interdisciplinary research and education programs link science with action, and are integrated across four major areas: freshwater system dynamics; human and ecosystem health; freshwater technology; and freshwater economics, policy, and management. It is the school’s goal to be recognized world-wide as the source of expert knowledge on water issues and a catalyst for great ideas that change how people think about and manage water resources.

The School of Freshwater Sciences is housed at UWM’s Harbor Campus at 600 E. Greenfield Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

    Job Summary:
Manage all aspects of multiple on-going, multi-disciplinary projects including the coordination of study design and implementation, sample collection, documentation, reporting, and communication. Teaching courses on bioinformatics for biologists. Opportunities for publishing scientific papers and participating in grant proposals for development of techniques and analysis related (Percentage of time spent on each facet of the position.)

    a) Development of project-specific bioinformatics (computational and database) tools in conjunction with Faculty, Students, and Academic Staff. (30%)

    b) Training and technical support for bioinformatics software including potentially teaching seminars or workshops. (10%)

    c) Analysis of genomic and sequence data generated by customers in the Center. (20%)

    d) Oversight of computational and informatics resources including software and hardware. Liaise with staff at the UWM computing cluster facility. (25%)
    e) Preparation of manuscripts, reports, web-based public databases, and funding proposals. (15%)

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
