  • Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Position at Joint BioEnergy Instiute

    JOB DESCRIPTION
The candidate will join the Deconstruction Division at the Joint BioEnergy Institute to develop computational methods to study microbial communities involved in lignocellulose deconstruction. In this work, the candidate will
analyze and integrate metagenomic, metatranscriptomic and metaproteomic datasets to identify proteins and metabolic pathways responsible for biomass deconstruction under themophilic and halophilic conditions.

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Develop computational methods to intergrate “omics” datasets generated from the analysis of microbial communities and microbial isolates
    • Generate assemblies and develop binning methods to reconstruct composite genomes from microbial populations
relevant to cellulose and lignin deconstruction
    • Identify mechanisms for cellulose deconstruction and lignin metabolism using “omics” datasets and metabolic modeling
    • Train members of the Microbial Communities group in applying computational methods to screen for enzymes and metabolic pathways relevant to the biological conversion of lignocellulose
    • Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of patents.
    • Participate in group meetings and seminars.
    • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientifc logbook/e-notebook of all experiments and analyses performed.
Ensure that others could duplicate results by maintaining accurate and clear records of results and methodologies.

    KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
    • Recent Ph.D in Biology, Biophysics or Computer Science
    • Experience in analyzing and interpreting “omics” datasets
    • Signifcant experience with bioinformatics tools
    • Ability to write scripts for extracting data from “omics” datasets
    • Ability to work with guidance of a director or principal investigator and collaborators and well as to conduct
experiments independently, maintain appropriate records and manage data.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to write grant proposals and establish independent
    funding.

If you are interested in this position, please send a CV to Dr. Steven Singer, Director of Microbial Communities Group, Deconstruction Division, Joint BioEnergy Institute [email protected]

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
