  • Hello

    Hello everyone!

I'm a undergraduate (Senior!) Systems Biology major. My professor highly recommended The Biostar Handbook to my classmates and I for our personal references and classes in our last couple of semesters. I really only signed up to ask a question at the moment because I don't feel like my knowledge base is yet at the point to be able to contribute to most of the discussions here.

About me: I'm a 32-year-old math and science nerd that decided to have a piece of paper saying as such, so I went back to school 4 years ago. I knew I couldn't learn Systems Biology on my own in a way that would be satisfactory, and to be honest I'm not the best student (or wasn't) so I felt a generic biology bachelor's might hold me back when it came time for grad school. The Systems Biology program at my school has been enlightening and fun and we're at the point where a year long research project must be completed to graduate (starting in the Fall). So I can't wait to work with some of the technology and gain some real experience in the field on both sides of the Systems Biology coin.

I hope to gain a lot of knowledge from these boards and eventually contribute once I actually start doing research full time. I'll be lurking for a couple of years after a few posts to get acquainted but I'm glad this community exists.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
