  • PhD student position in computational biology and systems medicine, uni of oslo

    Job description
    The Computational Biology and Systems Medicine group (Kuijjer group) at the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM), a Nordic EMBL partner, and the University of Oslo is looking for a PhD candidate. The position is available immediately. The appointment will be for three years.

    The Computational Biology and Systems Medicine group investigates how gene regulatory networks are disrupted in cancer. We do this by building computational tools that model networks of gene regulation, which represent for example how transcription factors or microRNAs regulate genome-wide gene expression. Using high-performance computing, we can model these networks for each individual sample in large-scale cancer `omics datasets. We then analyze these “big data” networks using statistical methods. This allows us to better understand both the system-wide level of changes, as well as specific disruptions in regulation that may drive cancer development, progression, and response to treatment.

    More about the position
    The fellowship period is 3 years and is devoted to carrying out one of the following projects.

    The first project focuses on the computational aspect of our research. This project aims to develop tools to correctly model gene regulation and to build gene regulatory networks. The candidate will both expand current tools (see https://www.kuijjerlab.org/tools/) and will develop new tools for network inference of different types of transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulation. The candidate will thoroughly test these methods on various human `omics datasets.

    The second project will largely focus on the bioinformatic/analytic aspect of our research. The aim will be to drive new discoveries in cancer research by big data modeling of gene regulation in individual cancer samples. The outcome of this project will be to identify new gene regulatory biomarkers and specific candidates for personalized treatment. We will do this for individual cancer types (we have a specific interest in sarcomas), as well as on studying pan-cancer gene regulation.

    As a PhD candidate you will be working under the direct supervision of Dr. Marieke Kuijjer (see kuijjerlab.org). The PhD candidate must take part in the University’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. There will be opportunities to start collaborations with other research groups at UiO and institutes abroad (we currently collaborate with groups at Harvard Chan School of Public Health and Leiden University Medical Center).

    Qualification requirements
    • Master’s degree or equivalent in computational biology, bioinformatics, cancer genomics, (bio)physics, computer science, statistics, or a related field. We are an interdisciplinary team and welcome students who want to expand their knowledge in either biology or computation.
    • Proficient in programming and/or scripting languages, such as R, Python, Matlab.
    • Good analytical skills.
    • Knowledge of statistics.
    • Documented ability to write scientific manuscripts.
    • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to work in a team environment.

    Desirable skills:[*]Previous experience with genomic data analysis[*]Experience with high-performance computing

    What other research groups at UiO are meant? And will I have to submit a list of reference persons from the Harvard Chan School of Public Health research center, if I worked there too? How long will the application be reviewed?
