Computational Approaches in Precision Medicine 27-28 July in Vienna

    Dear Colleagues,

We are organizing an international meeting on Computational Approaches in Precision Medicine 27-28 July in Vienna.

The meeting will feature topical contributions from the US FDA as well as key players from the US (Yale, Harvard, …), Asia (Shanghai), and Europe. Locally, we are proud to host Christoph Bock from the CeMM in Vienna, who is this year receiving the ISCB Overton Prize for his work in epigenomics. We are delighted that Sepp Hochreiter can join us from the JKU in Linz, who has won fame as one of the early pioneers of Deep Learning. Altogether, we are all set for a fun meeting full of exciting science! A tentative agenda is available online.

Now we need your engagement to make the meeting a success!

We are soliciting further high quality contributions to the meeting.
Please contact us if you want to present recent topical work in a talk or on a poster.

If you are optimizing your travel plans this summer, the workshop fits nicely into a group of back-toback meetings:
    MetaSUB in Stockholm 18-20 July
    ISMB in Prague 21-25 July,
    CAMDA@ISMB in Prague 22-23 July

So there’s a brilliant opportunity to have a hot science summer!

Please do spread the word about the meetings through your network of friends and colleagues.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

    Best wishes,
    Paweł & David

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
      by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...

From Collection to Sequencing: Why Sample Preparation and Preservation Define Sequencing Data
      by SEQadmin2

Data variability is still an issue in sequencing technologies despite the advances in reproducibility and accuracy of these platforms. But the problem does not originate in the sequencing itself, but in the previous steps, before the sample reaches the sequencer.

The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.
