    Postdoctoral Position in RNA Epigenetics

Three postdoctoral fellow positions are available at Sun Yat-Sen University School of life Science in the laboratory of Rui Zhang for epitranscriptome study and technical development. Chemical modifications on ribonucleotides are being profiled with increased efficiency and appreciated as important regulatory features. Our recent work revealed the prevalence and dynamics of A-to-I RNA editing, one of the most important RNA modifications in mRNAs (Ramaswami G.*, Zhang R.* et al., Nat Methods, 2013; Zhang R. et al., Nat Methods, 2014). Currently, we are digging deeper into the regulation, function, and evolution of RNA modifications, using a combination of biochemistry, cell biology, and high throughout sequencing technologies. Experimental ("wet lab") and computational ("dry lab") components are interwined and synergized in the lab.

Dr. Zhang has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles in Nature Methods, Nature Genetics, Science, Genome Research, PNAS, PLOS Genetics, The EMBO Journal, Genome biology, Molecular Biology and Evolution, et.al: https://scholar.google.com/citations...sortby=pubdate.

The Zhang lab is well funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Innovative and Entrepreneurial Research Team Program and The Thousand Talents Plan-The Recruitment Program for Young Professionals, with >10 million RMB in total funding.

    We currently have three openings:
    1. One candidate with Comparative Genomics and Evolutionary Genomics background;
    2. One candidate with Neuroscience background and experience in mouse genetics and dissection of mouse organs.
    3. One candidate with Enzymology and Biochemistry background.
S/he should be highly self-motivated, and have excellent communication skills and strong desire to learn.

Sun Yat-Sen University is consistently ranked among the top 10 universities in China. School of life Sciences is a leading institution in RNA biology and Genomics fields in China. Salary on appointment will be within the range 200,000 to 250,000 RMB per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Sun Yat-Sen University will offer affordable housing for postdoctoral scholars. The initial appointment is 3 years and Additional one-year extensions may be approved if the need for the appointment can be justified.

We will also help the candidate from oversea to apply the Guangdong Postdoctoral Fellowship for Overseas Researchers, which provides a 0.6 million RMB salary support (2 year, 0.3 million per year) and a 0.4 million house allowance to the postdoc researchers, directly.

Applicants should submit their CV and arrange three references to Dr. Rui Zhang ([email protected]) with email subject “Postdoctoral application”.

Advanced Sequencing Platforms Tackle Neuroscience’s Toughest Genomics Problems
    by SEQadmin2

Genomics studies in neuroscience face a special challenge due to the brain’s complexity and scarcity of samples. Mapping changes in cell type and state using conventional next-generation sequencing methods remains challenging. Advances in technologies like single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and long-read sequencing have opened the door to deeper studies of the brain and diseases like Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and schizophrenia.

Cancer Drug Resistance: The Lingering Barrier to Rising Survival
    by SEQadmin2

Cancer survival rates have significantly increased in the last few decades in the United States, reaching a combined 70% 5-year survival rate by 2021. Behind this number, there are years of research to find new therapies, drug targets, and early detection methods. But there is one core challenge that keeps slowing down these advances, and it’s about drug resistance.

There is no single reason why many patients don’t respond to treatment as expected. Cancer is...

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.
