The Baker Institute is the nation’s first multi-disciplinary organisation tackling the deadly trio of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease through research, education and patient care.

    About the Role
The Research Officer (RO) is a postdoctoral Bioinformatician who will be based at the Baker Institute in the Systems Genomics Lab and supervised by A/Prof Inouye and A/Prof Salim, Chief Biostatistician at the Baker Institute.

    Duties
You will perform a range of tasks, including:
    • Providing biostatistics and bioinformatics expertise for experimental/study design, data analyses and interpretation, and reporting of results.
    • Collaborating with other Baker Institute Laboratories to provide bioinformatics support and to identify experimental design/data analysis issues that would benefit from bioinformatics/biostatistics expertise.
    • Coordinating the processing and analysis of data.
    • Developing new and/or revised analytic methodologies.
    • Performing critical analyses of literature relevant to research.

    • Assisting with preparation of research publications and grant applications where relevant.
    • Proactive attendance at team meetings and attendance at all relevant seminars and staff meetings.

    Skills and Experience
To succeed in this role, you will have:
    • A PhD in a quantitative discipline (such as bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics or epidemiology) and/or health science discipline (such as biochemistry, molecular biology or genetics/genomics).
    • Research experience in genetics, genomics, computational biology or bioinformatics including significant experience in the statistical or computational analysis of large human genomic datasets.
    • Experience in the management, processing and quality control of large datasets.
    • Previous experience in coordinating activities of students and junior staff.
    • A high level of interpersonal skills, which enable the appointee to liaise effectively with a wide range of people at a variety of levels internal and external to the Baker Institute.
    • Demonstrated ability to use Unix-based systems, computing clusters and related queuing systems, modern scripting/programming languages including R.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and contribute to high impact research publications.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines without compromising close attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Proven ability to work as a member of a team as well as autonomously without close supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability and willingness to take initiative and to improve and enhance existing systems and procedures (quality assurance).

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating

New Genomics Technologies Take Aim at Long-Standing Limits
    by SEQadmin2

Researchers using sequencing and genomics tools often have to make trade-offs. They can choose between speed or scale, short reads or long-range information, or targeted panels or a view of the whole transcriptome. New technologies that have been released this year are built to address those tough choices.

We asked six companies the same four questions to learn about their latest products. The new technologies bring a lot to the table, including rethinking sequencing
