    Postdoc Fellow in The Bioinformatics

Rutgers University Waksman Institute is seeking a Post Doctoral Research Fellow on the Bioinformatics. The incumbent will assist Genomics Core in the data analysis, integration and visualization. S/he will work on a range of high throughput omics (genome, transcriptome, metabolome etc) data, and cutting edge projects on complex diseases.

    Minimum Education and Experience
    • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Statistics genetics, Computer science and/or population genetics
    • Experience in genomics analysis, next generation sequencing, and pipeline/database development
    • Proficiency in Unix/Linux environment, and with at least one programming language (Python, R, Perl, Java, C/C++ etc.)
    • Excellent knowledge and experience with large scale biological data analyses especially high-throughput sequencing data
    • Background in statistics and/or machine learning preferred
    • Establish reproducible data analysis pipeline, detailed documentation for method and results, and presentation and explain data and conclusion.
    • Familiarity with immunology and infectious disease a strong plus
    • Strong communication skills (verbal and technical) required
    • Detail oriented with ability to execute complex protocols
    • Team oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated ability to self-educate in current bioinformatics techniques and resources

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    1) to run analysis pipelines for NGS (next generation sequencing) data to support the Waksman Genomics Core activities
    (2) help researchers in bioinformatics processing and analysis of NGS data using the appropriate genomics tools
    (3) Development of innovative methods and/or novel applications of existing methods
    (4) Implementation of newly developed pipelines adopted by others in the field
    (5) Provide bioinformatics expertise in the planning and implementation of research concepts
    (6) To design and deploy analysis pipeline suitable for each project
    (7) To optimize analysis parameters including the development of research data standards
    (8) To use current open source software in conducting data analysis for NGS at basic and advanced levels

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
    by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...
