The Genomics Core provides fee for service analyses utilizing a number of NGS platforms (Illumina GAIIx/HiSeq, Roche/454, Ion Torrent), capillary sequencing, expression profiling, genotyping and others, as well as bioinformatics support for researchers at MSU. For more information about the Research Technology Support Facility, please visit our website.

    Required Qualifications
    • A PhD in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, or related field.
    • Experience with next generation sequencing platforms, current analytical platforms, and associated informatics and computational skills is required.
    • Strong communication skills, a service based orientation, and prior managerial experience with a core facility, service laboratory or similar operation is required.

    Desired
    • Experience with budget/cost structures, new technology adoption, process optimization, and cost efficiency.
    • An advanced degree or 4-6 years relevant experience.
    • Candidates with a strong record of research experience, as indicated by research publications and participation in successful grant applications, will be favored

Applications due April 1, 2012. Late submissions will be considered if a suitable candidate pool is not identified by the deadline. MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity employer. From Collection to Sequencing: Why Sample Preparation and Preservation Define Sequencing Data
    by SEQadmin2

Data variability is still an issue in sequencing technologies despite the advances in reproducibility and accuracy of these platforms. But the problem does not originate in the sequencing itself, but in the previous steps, before the sample reaches the sequencer.

The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.

Environmental Genomics in the Age of NGS: From Microbes to Conservation Strategies
    by SEQadmin2

Studying ecosystems means dealing with complex, multi-species communities that are hard to observe at scale. This complexity, however, hides many important questions to be answered, from how biogeochemical cycles work and how climate change can affect species distribution to how conservation strategies can work best.

Genomics, particularly since the expansion of NGS, has transformed ecosystem ecology. By sequencing environmental DNA, we can now assess biodiversity without direct...
