    Proposed Starting Date: To be determined after search closes

    Qualifications: B.S. with demonstrated experience or M.S./Ph.D. in Biology related fields. Candidate must be proficient in standard molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction/manipulation, cDNA synthesis, PCR, adaptor design for ligation to DNA, cDNA and genomic DNA library construction, and gene cloning. Experience with methods used for next-generation sequencing platforms is desirable.

    Must be eligible to work in the United States

    Responsibilities: The University of Illinois Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center is a core user facility and this position is associated specifically with the high-throughput DNA sequencing unit. Major responsibilities are preparation of genomic DNA, cDNA, and small RNA libraries for sequencing by Sanger or Roche 454 and Illumina next generation sequencing platforms as well as assist with sequencing procedures. This includes improvement and development of new protocols as well as troubleshooting.

    Type of Position: Full-time Academic Professional. Salary is commensurate with experience.

    Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

    I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.
