  • Bioinformatic services for labs

Hi I was wondering if labs/facilities would require a external bioinformatics service OR do most labs/facilities already have bioinformaticians of their own?

    Thanks

I guess that'll depend on the lab and the task. I expect most smaller labs and those who aren't oriented toward sequencing/bioinformatics will require external help. Our sequencing providers usually offer at least some basic bioinformatic services, so that may be sufficient for most users.

      expensive

Unless you are a pretty large lab you are not likely going to have your own bioinformatician. I suspect smaller labs might hire a postdoc or grad student with the idea of having them analyze the data but there is a learning curve. Not to mention that there are so many positions for NGS analysts open right now that there is a shortage of good quality bioinformaticians. I suspect that many labs will go with a trusted core facility over risking hiring someone of unknown ability from a shrinking pool of qualified applicants.

        Bioinformatic services for labs

It would be better if the lab have at least one Bioinformatician. Yeah, it could be sufficient that people can outsource to the company for bioinformatic services especially in NGS data analysis. But what if for simple task such as preparation a script for data conversion, developing a dataware house for biologist? Is that worth to outsource these kind of services to company? I don't think so. Plus your biologist might face everyday a new problem in data handling and data mining. So the best way is to have a bioinformatician closely in the lab with the biologist

            Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
            by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
