  • 2 PhD research fellows - bioinformatics and computational genomics

The Computational Life Science initiative at the University of Oslo would like to draw your attention to two available positions as PhD research fellow:

The Department of Informatics and the Department of Biology at the University of Oslo are announcing two PhD positions within the field of bioinformatics (ref. no. 2011/3807) and computational genomics (ref. no. 2011/3806) under the umbrella of the Computational Life Science initiative (CLSi).

    Please visit:
PhD Research Fellow in Bioinformatics – ref. no.: 2011/3807

PhD Research Fellow in Computational Genomics - ref. no.: 2011/3806

Both PhD positions will be involved in projects aiming at improving analysis of high throughput sequencing (HTS) data. The two PhD candidates should work as a team – with one position being more informatics/algorithm oriented, while the other more application oriented. Both PhD projects will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists at the Department of informatics, the Department of Biology and the Norwegian High-Throughput Sequencing Centre (NSC). The supervision of the two candidates will be carried out by a group of scientists including both biologists and computer scientists.

    Application deadline April 15, 2011.

        Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
        by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

        Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
        by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
