  • Purdue Genomics Core Technician

    This position has been filled.

    -------------------------------------------

We have a position in the Purdue Genomics Core that is now available. Some official details below. There are couple of salient features to the lab that don't show up there.

First, we are small shop. Just 3 full time people doing benchwork in the lab currently -- filling this position will bring us back up to 4. But we have a SOLiD 5500XL, an Illumina HiScanSQ (which uses all the same reagents, etc. as a HiSeq) and a GS-FLX which should be updated to FLX+ pretty soon.

Second, we have no human medical school on campus, so only a fraction of our samples are mammalian, or even vertebrate. In fact, even though we are a core for all of Purdue, our administrative unit (department) is Horticulture and Landscape Architecture in the College of Agriculture. So we are doing a lot of de novo work for plants, fungi, bacteria as well as animals you may never have even heard of. So, if you like variety, that might be a plus.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
      by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

      Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
      by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
