Forum functions may break temporarily...combating spam.

In an effort to reduce the likelihood of more private messaging spam, I am making some changes to the usergroups. Disabling private messaging for new users with < X posts will hopefully prevent all but the most diligent spammer.

If some forum functions don't seem to work, or you get a "permission denied" error, that's me messing with things behind the scenes. Shouldn't take long.

OK, I'm apparently done. New users will now not have PM permissions until they post a small number of posts. If you desperately need to send a PM, post in the Introductions forum.

This now gives us three layers of spam protection:

    1. New users (ip, username, email addy) screened against a known spammer blacklist.

    2. First XX posts for new users are screened very stringently for spam/links/etc, by Akismet.

    3. Users with less than X posts cannot use PM system.

Hopefully this helps, and apologies if you get caught in the crossfire, just email admin@ and I will take care of it ASAP.

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
      by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...
