Any ideas on real release dates for the 5500XL (solid 4hq) ? Has anyone got one yet ?

"Initial shipments of the 5500xl are planned for December 2010."

Oh that was from the press release at

There may be 5500xls in the field, if only as test units. That would fulfill the "initial shipments" claim.

Yes, release date is March/2011. Does anybody know the new output format? I believe it is called XSV or something like this..

I believe it is called HDF, which is a standardized file format (single file replaces csfasta, qual, and spch files).

At the Sequencing at the Tipping Point Conference, back in December, they were saying the new file format would be .xqs (or maybe it was .xsq?)
Its a binary file format, with one file per lane. This is supposed to be why theres no need for a cluster under the machine, its like 60% smaller.

Sorry, just remind me. It is called .xsq (eXtensible SeQuence)

I think the reason for not having a minicluster is the use of FPGAs along with a very powerful machine (like illumina). Anyone has more info about that? I guess we'll find out at AGBT.

Yes, I have ".xsq" in my notes as the new format name. They were going to be about 30 gigabytes per lane. 12 lanes per "flow chip".

By the way, looks like Life Tech has a free webinar on this very topic soon:

                          by SEQadmin2

Genomics studies in neuroscience face a special challenge due to the brain’s complexity and scarcity of samples. Mapping changes in cell type and state using conventional next-generation sequencing methods remains challenging. Advances in technologies like single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and long-read sequencing have opened the door to deeper studies of the brain and diseases like Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and schizophrenia.

Cancer Drug Resistance: The Lingering Barrier to Rising Survival
                          by SEQadmin2

Cancer survival rates have significantly increased in the last few decades in the United States, reaching a combined 70% 5-year survival rate by 2021. Behind this number, there are years of research to find new therapies, drug targets, and early detection methods. But there is one core challenge that keeps slowing down these advances, and it’s about drug resistance.

There is no single reason why many patients don’t respond to treatment as expected. Cancer is...
