Genomics and Biodiversity - AGA 2011

The American Genetic Association (AGA) is one of the oldest genetics societies in the US and continues to thrive today as the publisher of the Journal of Heredity. As the 2011 President of the AGA, it’s my great pleasure to invite you to attend and present a poster at our annual meeting, which will be held in the beautiful Spanish colonial town of Guanajuato, Mexico (a World Heritage Site), from July 23-26, 2011.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Genomics and Biodiversity” and I will be inviting ~25 speakers covering many taxonomic groups from bacteria to humans, as well as methodologies related to this theme. This will be the first time the AGA will be meeting in Mexico, and approximately half of our speakers will be leading researchers working in Mexico. The small size of the meeting maximizes opportunities for interaction and the entire meeting is a single session. We will begin the meeting on July 23rd with a reception at 5pm at the Hotel Camino Real in Guanajuato, where all the meeting speakers will be staying. On the 24th, we will be transported to the nearby town of Irapuato for a day of talks at the Laboratorio Nacional de Genomica para Biodiversidad (LANGEBIO), the spectacular new national laboratory devoted to genomics and biodiversity. We will return to Hotel Camino Real on the evening of the 24th and spend the 25th and 26th in talks in the impressive conference facilities at the hotel, ending on the 26th with an optional banquet. On the 27th you will have the option of joining us on a day-long excursion to take in some of the local biodiversity and also to visit the equally stunning colonial town of San Miguel de Allende.

We sincerely hope you can accept our invitation to this landmark event!

Advanced Sequencing Platforms Tackle Neuroscience’s Toughest Genomics Problems
      by SEQadmin2

Genomics studies in neuroscience face a special challenge due to the brain’s complexity and scarcity of samples. Mapping changes in cell type and state using conventional next-generation sequencing methods remains challenging. Advances in technologies like single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and long-read sequencing have opened the door to deeper studies of the brain and diseases like Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and schizophrenia.

Cancer Drug Resistance: The Lingering Barrier to Rising Survival
      by SEQadmin2

Cancer survival rates have significantly increased in the last few decades in the United States, reaching a combined 70% 5-year survival rate by 2021. Behind this number, there are years of research to find new therapies, drug targets, and early detection methods. But there is one core challenge that keeps slowing down these advances, and it’s about drug resistance.

There is no single reason why many patients don’t respond to treatment as expected. Cancer is...

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
      by GATTACAT
Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.
