    Summer Bioinformatics Internship, Infinity Pharmaceuticals

    Infinity Pharmaceuticals is seeking a Bioinformatics Summer Intern to provide support for our drug discovery efforts at our Cambridge, MA location. The intern will work with a bioinformatics scientist on one of our ongoing oncology programs, providing the opportunity to gain valuable scientific experience and learn more about research within a pharmaceutical company.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Performs well-defined research assignments and routine experiments with general supervision.

    Selects techniques, resolves problems with standard protocols, seeking guidance on non-routine issues.
    Writes software and uses analytic tools to solve specific scientific problems.
    Identifies and evaluates open source packages appropriate to scientific project.
    Reads scientific publications relevant to work and summarizes key points.
    Attends weekly Molecular Pathology and Informatics group meetings and periodically presents progress on assigned research project.
    Presents work at end of internship.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Eligible candidates must be Biology, Biochemistry, or Computer Science majors and have completed Undergraduate Sophomore year at minimum prior to the start of the internship.

    Qualified applicants must have taken at least 2 years of biology or computer science courses.
    Strong verbal communication skills a plus.
    SCIENTIFIC/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

    Ability to program in R, Scala, C#, Java or Perl. Familiarity with BioPerl, BioJava and/or Bioconductor a plus.
    Familiarity with one or more online bioinformatics tools such as Entrez/PubMed, UCSC Genome Browser, COSMIC.
    Demonstrates basic knowledge of scientific principles, procedures and techniques. Knowledge of the basics of cancer cell biology or genomics is a plus.
    Working knowledge of Excel and Powerpoint. Experience with Spotfire a plus.
    OTHER INFORMATION

    This is a 10-12 week internship starting on June 1, 2010. This is an hourly paid position, which does not include room and board.

    Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

    I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.
