Startup "Knome" offers complete genome sequence for $350k!

Yes, another personal genomics startup has made an announcement today! Knome has put out a press release with details of their offering, which in contrast to the SNP chips offered by others, includes full genome sequencing and genetic counseling!

All this for the surprisingly reasonable cost of $350k. This represents a 10,000-fold reduction in cost when compared to the $3 billion price tag for the first human genome. Should be interesting to see exactly what technology they will be using, one could surmise that they will be using a hombrew machine built via George Church's (and other's) labs.

    From the release:
Pricing for Knome’s service will start at $350,000, including whole-genome sequencing and a comprehensive analysis from a team of leading geneticists, clinicians and bioinformaticians. This team will also provide continued support and counseling.
GenomeWeb also has a writeup today summarizing the release.

      Miki! You posted!

$350k for a house in California? Where?

Thanks again for your help with the RSS issues.

I'm actually in Montana right now, I can buy myself 2 houses for that price.

I heard they allied with BGI now and BGI will use their HiSeq 2000 to sequence the genomes.

Since 100 out of BGI's 128 HiSeq 2000s will be located in BGI's Hong Kong shop. I suppose this makes HK an unexpected sequencing hot place.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
            by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...

From Collection to Sequencing: Why Sample Preparation and Preservation Define Sequencing Data
            by SEQadmin2

Data variability is still an issue in sequencing technologies despite the advances in reproducibility and accuracy of these platforms. But the problem does not originate in the sequencing itself, but in the previous steps, before the sample reaches the sequencer.

The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.
