  • Bioinformatics Postdoc Open at the University of Newcastle, Australia

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our group in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, the University of Newcastle. Our group is led by Dr Murray Cairns, running the Molecular Neurobiology laboratory, and is seeking to understand the molecular basis of neural development and function, and the etiology of neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, by combining high-throughput experimental techniques with state-of-the-art genomics and basic neuroscience. With the demand to analyse huge volume of high-throughput experimental data including next generation sequencing, our group is looking for bioinformaticians with the expertise of developing computational and statistical methods for analysis and integration of various types of next-generation sequencing data.

Qualified candidates should have a PhD in bioinformatics, statistical genomics, or related fields. Candidate should have extensive experience on next generation sequencing data analysis. Experience with microRNA research is a plus. The successful candidate will construct analysis pipelines with existing software tools for analysis of next generation sequencing data towards biological discovery, and will also develop novel computational and statistical methods if such methods are not available.

The University of Newcastle is one of the best Australian Universities with strengths in health and medical research. Publications of our group can be accessed via PubMed at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?...urray+j+cairns.

Interested candidates should send a CV and three referees' contact details to

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
