  • NSF credit/recognition format change--please comment

At a meeting last month sponsored by the US National Academies in Washington DC I learned that the NSF (US National Science Foundation, funder of scientific research) as part of the updates to their Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide with an anticipated effective date of January 2013 have revised sections of the biographical sketch information on senior personnel participating in research grant proposals. (see below)

Especially if your work is ahead of traditional publishing opportunities available (for example Journal of Open Research Computing->BMC Source Code for Biology & Medicine) I invite you to comment further on these changes and how they might improve our field such as making research software better. Thanks.

What will be deleted in section c of the current guide is
    Deleted: (c) Publications

A list of: (i) up to five publications most closely
related to the proposed project; and (ii) up to
five other significant publications, whether or not
related to the proposed project. Each
publication identified must include the names of
all authors (in the same sequence in which they
appear in the publication), the article and journal
title, book title, volume number, page numbers,
and year of publication. If the document is
    available electronically, the website address
    also should be identified.

For unpublished manuscripts, list only those
submitted or accepted for publication (along
with most likely date of publication). Patents,
    copyrights and software systems developed
may be substituted for publications. Additional
lists of publications, invited lectures, etc., must
    not be included.
    ______________________________________________

This section will be replaced with the following
    (c) Products

A list of: (i) up to five products most closely related to the proposed project; and (ii) up to five other significant
products, whether or not related to the proposed project. Acceptable products must be citable and accessible
including but not limited to publications, data sets, software, patents, and copyrights. Unacceptable products are
unpublished documents not yet submitted for publication, invited lectures, and additional lists of products. Only
the list of 10 will be used in the review of the proposal.
Each product must include full citation information including (where applicable and practicable) names of all
authors, date of publication or release, title, title of enclosing work such as journal or book, volume, issue, pages,
website and Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or other Persistent Identifier.

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
