The Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) at Baylor College of Medicine is looking for a highly motivated individual to perform complex and advanced research work requiring high-level skills and expertise. This position is expected to independently initiate and advance new ideas and may be required to supervise others in planning and completing these research and development projects.

The HGSC was founded in 1996 under the leadership of Dr. Richard Gibbs and is a world leader in genomics. The fundamental interests of the HGSC are in advancing biology and genetics by improved genome technologies. As one of the three large-scale sequencing centers funded by the National Institutes of Health, the HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work on the cutting edge of genomic science in a state of the art institution.

Experimentation will focus on NexGen Platform advancement including novel library and capture techniques, as well as development of molecular assays for application in biological questions particularly in the areas of cancer and mendelian genomics as well as clinical applications. Efforts will be applicable to all major NexGen platforms including Illumina (HiSeq and MiSeq), SOLiD, Ion Torrent and PacBio instrumentation.

    Job Duties:
*Plans, directs and conducts research experiments.
    *Evaluates and analyzes data.
*Develops research techniques and performs applications required for specific research projects.
*Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in appropriate format.
*Effectively documents results of experiments for reporting to upper level management.
*Participates in grant and publication preparation.
*May supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
