Postdoctoral position: bioinformatics applied to heart disease and development

Drs. Cappola and Morrisey of the Penn Cardiovascular Institute seek a post-doctoral fellow to conduct research using microarrays and next-generation sequencing data from human subjects with heart disease and murine models of heart disease and development. Ongoing projects include

    1) Large-scale eQTL, RNAseq , and miRNAseq of human myocardium ( n = 1000 )
    2) ChIPseq of human and murine heart
    3) Related DNAseq studies in human populations.

Projects are accomplished in collaboration with Drs. Hongzhe Li and Mingyao Li (Center for Genetics of Complex Traits) and with Dr. Jonathan Schug (Bioinformatics and Next Gene Sequencing Core) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

This position requires excellent programming skills and firm knowledge of Bioinformatics. Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing Data and knowledge of Plink, C, Perl, Python, R, SAMTOOLS, BWA, GATK, Bowtie, Tophat and related tools are required. The ability to work between both computational and biology disciplines is required. Must have a demonstrated ability to multi-task and work effectively within tight turnaround schedules, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
