Default Postdoctoral Research position in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Genetics

3-year Postdoctoral Research position in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Genetics. Oxford University

This is a full-time post for three years in the first instance funded by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) – Global Research Programme (GRP), and is available as soon as practicable. The grant holder is Professor Nicholas Harberd FRS, and the successful applicant will be under his immediate direction. The project is a collaboration with Dr Ioannis Ragoussis and Professor Richard Mott at the University of Oxford Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, and involves a stimulating mix of genetics, molecular genetics, high-throughput sequencing, statistical analysis, bioinformatics and computer programming.

Professor Harberd’s research group re-located to Oxford from the John Innes Centre, Norwich in August 2007, and currently comprises a research laboratory manager, four postdocs (one joint with the Wellcome Trust Centre), a DPhil student, and four technicians. The group’s interests focus on genetic/genomic approaches to the comparative study of plant biology using various model species. In particular, the group is taking a genomic approach to the study of evolution and adaptation in wheat, using ‘next generation’ (Illumina, Roche 454 etc) DNA sequencing technologies. The role of this position is to contribute to the wheat project. We are interested in outstanding individuals who will bring expertise in any of the following areas: bioinformatic/computational analyses of genomes; plant genetics/molecular genetics; cereal breeding/physiology. We are particularly interested in individuals who can apply advanced computational data-analysis skills to the solution of important biological problems.

Title: Crop-plant domestication in the genome-biology era

Project description: This exciting multidisciplinary project combines cutting edge genomic science, bioinformatic data analysis and classical plant genetics to answer important questions concerning the evolution and adaptation of wheat, the world’s major food crop.

Selection criteria

Candidates will be assessed in relation to the following selection criteria.

1. A PhD/DPhil in genetics, bioinformatics, statistics or computer science.

2. Demonstrated ability to define research objectives, and to flexibly re-define according to circumstances.

3. A record of appropriate publications.

4. An ability to conceptually span the disciplines of ‘classical’ plant genetics, high-throughput pyrosequencing technology and bioinformatic analyses and to communicate that understanding to group members expert in other disciplines.

5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and largely unsupervised.

6. Experience of genome sequence annotation, assembly and associated bioinformatic analysis and computational biology.

7. Experience in genetic/molecular genetic analysis and/or cereal breeding and physiology.

8. Skills in one or several programming/scripting languages (Perl, Python, Tcl, C/C++, Pascal, R) and experience in database programming (eg. MySQL), together with practical experience of genome annotation and evolutionary bioinformatics.

9. Skills in genomic database handling, bioinformatic search algorithms and statistical analysis tools (e.g. MatLab, S-Plus, SAS) to further the aims of the project.

10. Ability to assist the work of junior researchers and students.

11. Good writing and communication skills, including the ability to write research articles and present results at national and international symposia.

12. The ability to work co-operatively as part of a team and to interact productively with collaborators.

13. Commitment to the project.

General Conditions

The appointment will be on the postdoctoral Grade 7 scale for academic-related staff and the starting point will be within the range £28,839 - £35,469, actual starting point to be determined by age and experience. The annual holiday entitlement will be 38 days (including days taken on fixed dates at Christmas and Easter, and 8 public holidays). The appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period, during which the notice period will be one month on either side. Once the appointment has been confirmed the notice period will be three months on either side. The appointment of the nominated candidate will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a medical questionnaire and evidence of their eligibility to work in the UK.

The successful applicant will have the option of becoming or remaining a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), a pension scheme that provides a pension and lump sum based on length of service and final salary. All new staff are automatically treated as members unless they give notice in writing to say they do not wish to take part in the scheme. The University also offers a Stakeholder pension scheme which most employees may join either instead of, or in addition to, the main scheme. The University has a generous maternity leave scheme and also offers paternity leave to expectant fathers and partners, and adoption leave. The University has a no-smoking policy and smoking is not permitted within either Department.

All University staff may use the study facilities provided by university libraries and museums; join the University Club, a sports and social club which has its own bar, café, and reading room; and make use of the University Sports Complex and the Pulse fitness centre. A number of discounts are available to university staff e.g. for insurance, holiday travel, and computer equipment.
