    Dear Colleagues,

We announce a Call for Contributions to the CAMDA Satellite Meeting of ISMB

Researchers world-wide take the CAMDA Challenge (www.camda.info) - compete with the best in an open-ended data analysis contest!

For 2016, we offer following challenges:
    * The Oxford Nanopore ‘wiggle space’ challenge where several samples had their DNA sequenced by Nanopore long read next-next-generation sequencing as well as more established sequencing technology. This is then to be evaluated on a 'mystery' sample of patient microbiota.
    * Sequencing Quality Control neuroblastoma study - a comparison of RNA-seq and Agilent microarray gene expression profiles for clinical endpoint prediction.
    * A toxicogenomics study with matched NGS and microarray profiles for the response of over 100 rat livers to 27 chemicals with 9 different modes of action.

Join us for a stimulating scientific meeting and lively discussions in Orlando 8-9 July 2016!

Please follow us on twitter @CAMDA_conf!

    Background:

CAMDA was founded in 2000 (Nature 411, 885. Nature 424, 610) to provide a forum for the critical assessment of different techniques used in large-scale data analysis in the life-sciences, including but not limited to high-dimensional gene expression profiling. It aims to establish the state-of-the-art in analysis methods for Big Data in the Life Sciences, as well as identify progress and highlight promising directions for future efforts. To this end, CAMDA adopted the approach of a community-wide contest, with the scientific community analysing the same data sets. Researchers worldwide are invited to take the CAMDA challenge, which has become a prominent fixture (cf. Nature Methods 5, 569).

Accepted contributions are presented though talks and posters, and the results and methods of the different analyses are discussed and compared at the conference, with selected presentations published in a special Open Access proceedings issue in collaboration with the Systems Biomedicine journal (Taylor & Francis).

Running as an official Satellite meeting of ISMB (established since 2011) provides further opportunities for interaction with colleagues.

Keynotes by leading researchers in the field provide further focus points for discussion at the meeting.

We hope to see you in Orlando!

    Best Regards,

CAMDA16 - Extended abstract submission deadline

    Dear Colleagues,

In response to requests we have extended abstract submission until 29 May midnight. Please visit www.camda.info for more details.

We are delighted to confirm keynotes by
    - Curtis Huttenhower, Harvard University, and
    - Mick Watson, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh

This year, the scientific committee of CAMDA has set three data analysis contest challenges:
    - The Oxford Nanopore ‘wiggle space’ challenge where several samples had their DNA sequenced by Nanopore long read next-next-generation sequencing as well as more established sequencing technology. This is then to be evaluated on a 'mystery' sample of patient microbiota.
    - A toxicogenomics study with matched NGS and microarray profiles for the response of over 100 rat livers to 27 chemicals with 9 different modes of action. The challenge focus here is on alternative gene transcripts and splicing, and their regulation.
    - A neuroblastoma cohort with matched RNA-seq and microarray gene expression profiles for clinical endpoint prediction.

CAMDA focuses on the analysis and integration of the massive data sets now prevalent in the life sciences. It introduces new approaches and solutions to the Big Data problem, and presents new techniques in the fields of bioinformatics, data analysis, and statistics for handling and processing challenging large data sets. By discussing cutting-edge problems and opportunities, the conference offers researchers from a wide range of fields a unique opportunity to benefit from a critical comparative evaluation of approaches to exploiting Big Data in the life-sciences.

We cordially invite submission of your analyses of any topical aspects of any of the challenge data sets, as well as relevant method papers.

We look forward to your contributions and hope to see you 8/9 July in Orlando, Florida!

    With best regards,
    Lan Hu

        Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
        by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
