Cool Postdoctoral position in distributed statistical computing for NGS

A postdoctoral position is open in Dr. Shen’s group at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Our research mainly focuses on using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to study epigenomic mechanisms of brain diseases, such as drug addiction and depression. Through collaborations with multiple investigators both inside and outside Mount Sinai, we have analyzed hundreds of NGS samples in the total size of 30-50TB. Through these works, we have accumulated significant amount of experience and established many pipelines and procedures in NGS analysis. We are also actively developing novel methods to advance the information extraction, interpretation and visualization of NGS data. Based on our own experience and a multitude of feedbacks from our collaborators and users, we have built the following two program packages:

diffReps – differential analysis for ChIP-seq: https://code.google.com/p/diffreps/
ngs.plot – biological hypotheses testing with NGS data: https://code.google.com/p/ngsplot/

Both software are now used world-wide and are gaining their popularity. diffReps manuscript is now accepted by PLoS ONE; ngs.plot manuscript will be submitted this summer. We will continue to develop these software which have proved to be very useful for researchers in the field. Now, we need your help to make them even better. Are you the right person?

You will use advanced statistical approaches to turn raw data into useful and user friendly information. You will use the recently developed technologies in distributed computing to make our programs run faster and our databases more efficient and more scalable. If you are very quantitative in mind, like to deal with large volume of data and love challenges, this is a wonderful opportunity!

As part of the job responsibility, you will also participate through the life cycle of one or more projects to answer biological questions using NGS analysis. This will expose you to experimental biologists who are literally from another planet. You will learn about what interests a biologist most and obtain feedbacks. These experiences will make you a better bioinformatician and help you build better bioinformatic software!

Overall, we are very well funded and are determined to do the best quality research. For more information, please also visit: http://neuroscience.mssm.edu/shen/
