paired-end reads and shotgun

hi,

I hope someone can help me,
I just started to study the genomics and learn about the genome sequencing.
What exactly is the advantage of "paired-end reads"?
Is the shotgun method basically is producing several libraries containing different size inserts and then followed by single end reads?
I feel a bit confused with these methods.
