Default High Performance Computing Systems Administrator at New York University

Position Summary
Biology is an increasingly computational field, and NYU's Biology Faculty are leading the way in using high performance computing for projects ranging from protein folding to storage and analysis of petabytes of next-generation sequencing data. Its commitment to the computationally intensive fields of genomics and systems biology is represented by its $100M investment in a brand new building housing the latest sequencing platforms and an 8 rack server room.

The successful candidate for this position will be solely responsible for managing multiple Unix clusters and several desktop Unix servers (physical and virtual); configuring network devices; administering cluster management and scientific software; assisting in hardware purchasing decisions; installing hardware and tracking inventories; and generally addressing all scientific computing needs.

Required Experience
Bachelor's degree with 2 or more years experience as a Unix/Linux systems administrator, including cluster management.

Preferred Experience
Master’s degree in technical field with 4 or more years experience as a Unix/Linux cluster administrator. You will need to operate independently to support all scientific computing infrastructure in the department. Thus, the ability to learn new tools and concepts quickly is more essential than prior experience with any specific tools. Nonetheless, experience with some of the following will be important: compiling scientific software, Open MPI; PBS/Torque/Grid Engine; configuring database, file, and web servers; installing and maintaining various UNIX OS's, Rocks, Ganglia, Nagios, Hadoop, etc; knowledge of backup solutions for large quantities of data; and tuning configurations for high performance needs, such as minimizing latency and maximizing throughput.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of common scripting languages, network and communication protocols, and multiple Unix-like operating systems. Ability to work well individually, and take ownership of projects. Excellent communication skills. Motivated to work in a dynamic and challenging research environment.
