Default The Secondary Data field in PubMed

We have retrieved a set of PubMed articles using NGS search terms. In these Hello,
we find links from some PubMed entries to Genbank and to GEO. These links are in the secondary data field, but they are incomplete, i.e. in many cases GEO links to PubMed using PMIDs, but the corresponding PubMed entry does not link back.

We have a number of questions about this.
- who makes the entries into the secondary field – the authors or PubMed?
- And related to the Q above, when is this information entered into this field – is it only when the publication is submitted to PubMed?
- If people publish secondary analyses on existing data is there any expectation on them to formally link back to data they used, if so how is this typically done?"
- We have not found any links to SRA, for example. Is our failure to find them because a special code is being used for SRA that we don’t know?

Thank You for your help in advance.
