  • Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Epigenomics at Ontario Cancer Institute - Toronto

    The Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI) at Princess Margaret Hospital - a teaching hospital of the University of Toronto - ranks in the top 5 cancer research centers in the world. Its research activities are concentrated on epigenomics, cancer immunotherapy, cancer stem cells, image-guided therapeutics, patient survivorship, and personalized medicine. The University of Toronto and its affiliated hospital research institutes comprise one of the largest and most productive centers of biomedical research in North America while the City of Toronto is ranked fourth in the Economist’s list of World’s Most Liveable Cities, and second in PriceWaterhouseCooper’s Cities of Opportunity in 2011.

    Computational Biology

    A bioinformatics Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate position is available immediately within the group of Daniel D. De Carvalho, Ph.D. Our lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms driving cancer-specific epigenetic alterations, with the ultimate goal of allowing target-specific epigenetic interventions. To achieve this goal, we perform functional genomic screening, combined with systems biology and a variety of genome-wide profiling of epigenetic modifications, using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and microarray technologies. We are specifically seeking individuals with strong computational, bioinformatics, and/or statistical backgrounds to be involved in NGS data analysis. Applicants must be highly motivated and able to communicate effectively in English.

    For more information about our work, prospective applicants are encouraged to refer to the following papers:
    Cancer Cell. 2012 May 25;21(5):655-67 (PMID: 22624715);
    Cell. 2011 Dec 9;147(6):1283-94 (PMID: 22153073);
    PNAS. 2011 Aug 30;108(35):14497-502 (PMID: 21844352);
    PLoS Genet. 2011 Feb 3;7(2):e1001286 (PMID: 21304883);
    Nat Biotechnol. 2010 Oct 13;28(10):1069- 1078 (PMID: 20944599);
    Oncogene. 2011 Jan 13;30(2):223-33 (PMID: 20838376).

    Please send your curriculum vitae and the contact information for 3 references to Daniel D. De Carvalho, Ph.D. ([email protected]).

    Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

    The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

    Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
