  • Bioinformatics PhD Studentship Available at Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand

We are seeking an enthusiastic student to join the group as a PhD student. The prospective student will have the chance to work in a fast-growing interdisciplinary field on the interface of biology and computer science.

The group’s research interests focus on transcriptional regulatory processes and their influence on disease states. As a student you will learn about the newest computational and statistical means to analyse biological and biomedical data from next-gen sequencing and other technologies. There are a variety of projects available, please see the lab website for examples of the work we do. However, students with their own research projects are also encouraged to contact me to assess if they fit the research profile of the lab.

The ideal candidate would have experience in at least one programming language, database design, and statistics. Biological background knowledge is also desirable. Applicants must have a BSc(Hons) or MSc degree in a relevant discipline and the willingness to learn and apply new techniques and work in a team. Both local and international students are encouraged to apply.

The studentship covers all university fees and includes an annual tax-exempt stipend of NZ$25,000 for three years.

Sebastian Schmeier recently joined Massey University and started his own research group in Auckland, New Zealand, a city regularly ranked one of the most liveable in the world. This is your chance to experience the amazing Auckland lifestyle and the excitement of joining a young new science team, while staying connected to world-class scientific networks.

To apply for the position, please send a cover letter stating your interest in the position and why you think you would be a good candidate, a Curriculum Vitae, a copy of your academic transcript, and the names of two referees. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Enquiries and applications to Dr. Sebastian Schmeier ([email protected])

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
