  • Post-Doctoral Position in Bioinformatics / Genome Analysis in Uppsala, Sweden

BACKGROUND: We are seeking a post-doctoral scientist with a strong background in bioinformatics and/or genome analysis for work within an ongoing plant genome sequencing project. The project is focused on understanding the early evolution of plants, and in particular their adaptation to life on land. A draft genome sequence has been completed, and we are now moving into the analysis and interpretation phase of the project. Practical experience with post-assembly genome analysis is therefore particularly meritorious. Knowledge about plant evolution and plant biology are additional merits.

Our department belongs to the SLU BioCenter, a recently created strong research environment for basic and applied research about plants and microorganisms. There are therefore excellent opportunities for interactions with other research groups, including groups doing genome sequencing in plants and fungi. The BioCenter is located on the main campus of SLU outside Uppsala, 70 km North of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will work together with a small team of biologists and bioinformaticians. The duties will include: 1) Processing and analysis of next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing data. 2) Transcript mapping and gene modeling based on transcript data. 3) Analysis of the data, including phylogenetic analysis and comparative genomics. 4) Development and testing of scripts and pipelines needed for the work.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, or in a biology related field with a strong interest in bioinformatics or genome analysis. Familiarity with at least one scripting language (perl and R preferred) and a good understanding of genomics tools and databases are required. Previous experience with post-assembly genome analysis is preferred. Knowledge about plant biology and plant evolution is a bonus. An ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment with good communication and teamwork skills is essential.

TERMS: Full-time employment for up to 2 years. Starting date September 1, 2011 or later as agreed on.

HOW TO APPLY: Send an email to [email protected] with a cc: to [email protected] and "SLU ua 2412/2011" in the subject line. Applications should include a curriculum vitae with a full list of publications, a brief description of research experience, a copy of Ph.D. diploma, and contact information for at least two reference persons familiar with the applicant's qualifications.

    For further information, see: http://epi-resurs.slu.se/Platsannons...id=569&Sprak=e

    DEADLINE: August 1, 2011.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
