Default Bioinformatics Engineer: Johns Hopkins University

We are seeking a motivated bioinformatics engineer to play a key role in the pioneering research program of The Epigenetics Center of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. The Epigenetics Center houses an outstanding team of multidisciplinary investigators exploring the epigenetic basis of development and disease.

Essential Job Functions:
• Participate in the development of solutions using extensive programming/analytical expertise for long-term projects to include maintenance, modification or development of applications/solutions.
• Apply system analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into high level functional/technical specifications and designs. Research technology developments and measure their impact on existing standards and application architectures. Coordinate and provide experienced leadership to strategic planning, design, implementation, and verification of software, software system models, platform software advancement and product software. Serve as a technical resource for the development team working on highly complex applications. May be required to use technical expertise to install/maintain specialized areas of OS and related software. Create, review and implement automated facilities that result in cost reduction, operating efficiency and increased user satisfaction.
• Work is complex and varied in nature. Define and discern key aspects of a problem and develops an integrated solution within a broad technical and business context. May provide guidance/training to more junior staff. Recognized expert internally within a discipline.
• May delegate to lower level IT staff.
• Advises senior management, negotiates with vendors and customers.
• Is expected to lead as a technical expert and to participate with senior business leaders to affect change in the environment. Is a resource/mentor for others within and beyond the organization.
• Serves as project leader for moderate and large projects. Will be responsible for a significant function/phase of the largest projects.
• Generally works independently. Responsible for general oversight of any size project. Examples are not readily available in existing code or online. Experience and broad principles guide development. Serve as a resource to more junior staff.
• Participate in a training program jointly developed with their manager/supervisor to gain technical and soft skills. Serve as a technical consultant for both internal and external areas. Mentor lower level IT personnel as well as user community with their expert knowledge of the application.
• May oversee work of more junior staff/be a team leader.

Laboratory Operations:
• Interfaces with co-investigator and collaborators in providing laboratory data—including format design, data systems, etc.
• Develops and maintains research project laboratory databases.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.

Six years in a comparable lab performing relevant techniques, coupled with a knowlege of biological sciences, chemistry, or related field. Additional education can substitute for experience. Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience. Thorough understanding of cluster computing, Linux and Windows. Experience with R/Bioconductor, Bowtie, SAMtools, BEDtools, Perl, and Python are desirable, and competence in C or C++ is a plus.

Salary range: $70,214 - $96,515
