  • Postdoctoral researchers (2 positions), CNAG, Barcelona

We seek two postdoctoral researchers for data analysis and methods development at the Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG) based at the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB).

The primary mission of the CNAG is to carry out large-scale DNA sequence analysis projects in human and other species in collaboration with researchers in Catalonia, Spain and internationally. The CNAG operates ten Illumina HiSeq2000 sequencers and has a dedicated 13 Tflop compute cluster with a 2 petabyte disk storage array.

The successful applicants will be closely involved with the European Blueprint epigenome project (http://blueprint-epigenome.eu) , currently ongoing, in the roles of data analysis and interpretation. Both successful candidates will work for the Bioinformatics Development Group Leader.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Operation and maintenance of the pipeline for primary analysis of whole genome bisulphite sequence data.
    2. Design and implementation of secondary epigenomics data analysis pipelines (data integration, data mining and interpretation).
    3. Interacting with European partners in the BLUEPRINT project (data submission to archives, collaborating on analyses).

    Candidate profile:
    1. A Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or related discipline.
    2. Very able with Unix operating systems.
    3. A good working knowledge of compiling and installing software, shell scripts, databases, Perl and/or Python, and R.
    4. An advanced knowledge of C, C++ or other high-performance language for numerical computing would be an advantage, as would previous experience with high-volume data analysis.
    5. Excellent organizational and communication skills.
    6. Good spoken and written English.

A cover letter and a full CV including contact details should be sent to:

Att. Àrea de Gestió de Personal / [email protected]
    Reference: CNAG Postdoc Statgen
Applications must be submitted in English

Deadline for applications: 1st of July 2012

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
