  • Variant Analysis, Bioinformatics Prerequisites, & Genome Browser workshops @ UC Davis

Announcing Three Upcoming Workshops at University of California, Davis (Davis, CA, USA)

UCSC Genome Browser … Bioinformatics Prerequisites … and Variant Analysis!

Each of these workshops is suitable for beginners, and are also of interest to those with some data analysis experience. The workshops will be taught by members of the UC Davis Bioinformatics Core (for Variant Analysis and Prerequisites) and people from UCSC (for the genome browser workshop). We have been training bioinformaticians for over 10 years and, because our primary work is data analysis, we are well suited to teach the best bioinfomatic methods. For more information, and to register for a workshop, go to https://registration.genomecenter.ucdavis.edu/

August 21-22: UCSC Genome Browser Workshop

The UCSC Genome Browser (http://genome.ucsc.edu/) is a powerful tool for interacting with genome assemblies of many organisms. This workshop will introduce you to the wealth of data contained in the browser and related databases, and will allow you to integrate and compare results of your genomic and transcriptomic experiments.

For more information and to register, go to https://registration.genomecenter.ucdavis.edu/.

    August 27-31: Variant Analysis Workshop

This workshop will include a rich collection of lectures and hands-on sessions, covering both theory and tools associated with command-line DNA variant analysis. Participants will explore experimental design, cost estimation, data generation, and analysis of DNA sequence data generated on the Illumina sequencing platform. Participants will explore software and protocols, create and modify workflows, and diagnose/treat problematic data utilizing high performance computing services. Exercises will be performed with provided datasets, using command-line interaction on the Genome Center Compute Cluster, which will be available to you to use for a week after the workshop, so you can continue to practice these skills.

For more information and to register, go to https://registration.genomecenter.ucdavis.edu/.

    September 4-7: Bioinformatics Prerequisites Workshop
This workshop will cover the basic prerequisites required before performing bioinformatics analysis, including basic command line and high performance computing concepts, how to install software, use help, run applications, and advanced command line (shell scripting, pipes, etc.). Also covered will be basic R programming, basic statistical concepts, and model building. There are no prerequisites for this workshop other than an interest in bioinformatics! We are also offering the option of taking either the Command-Line portion (first two days) or the R portion (last two days) separately.
