  • Bioinformatics Researcher – Postdoctoral Level, New York City

A postdoctoral position is open in Dr. Shen’s group at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Our research focuses on bioinformatic analysis of epigenomic data for brain diseases, such as drug addiction and depression. The data we work with are mainly short reads from next-generation sequencing machines, which are generated from Mount Sinai’s sequencing core facility. We have accumulated more than one hundred ChIP-seq and RNA-seq run samples, with much more coming in the next few years.

You will use the most advanced statistical methods to analyze these data and make a story out of it. You will also develop novel approaches to optimize our use of these data and build applications. We routinely use different kinds of statistical models, machine learning techniques and Bayesian inference to work on dataset with more than 1TB. If you are very quantitative in mind, like to deal with large data volume and love challenges, this is a wonderful opportunity!

My group mainly collaborates with Dr. Eric Nestler who is a world-renowned neuroscientist. I also have collaborations with several other faculty members in the neuroscience department. We are very well funded and are determined to do the best quality research. We will pay you more than the NIH standard to compensate for the high living cost in New York City. Depending on your performance, you will also have the opportunity to be promoted as a staff scientist!

    Requirements:
    - Ph.D. in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics or related fields.
    - Strong problem solving skills.
    - Can do attitude with some hacker’s spirits.
    - Good knowledge about molecular biology, genomics and sequencing technology.
    - Strong programming skills with scripting languages such as Perl, Python or PHP.
    - At least one year experience with statistical computing platforms; R preferred.
    - Working experience with machine learning, Bayesian inference a strong plus.
    - Working experience with cloud computing a strong plus.
    - Working experience with Linux operating system a must.
    - Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Interested person should send his/her CV along with three references to [email protected]

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
