  • Bioinformatics research associate for NIH Cancer Genome Atlas

    Description
The Chiang lab is seeking a bioinformatics research associate to join a dynamic new research group at the University of North Carolina. As part of a collaborative team at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, we will collect gene expression data on 2000 tumors per year for the NIH Cancer Genome Atlas project. We are recruiting a highly motivated team member to analyze Illumina next-generation sequence data from this project. The successful candidate will work independently to discover mutations and aberrant transcripts from tumors. This effort requires both the automation of third-party software, as well as code development to implement statistical tests and visualization tools. The candidate will generate reports to summarize these results and store them in a database. In addition, he or she will regularly communicate research findings to other scientists in the group.

    Education Requirements
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, or a related field. A PhD degree is preferred.

    Qualifications and Experience
Strong programming skills in C/C++ or Java are required, as well as a solid understanding of statistical methods. The applicant must demonstrate excellent communication skills and resourcefulness in working independently. Previous experience with mySQL, Oracle, R or MATLAB are preferred. The ideal applicant has at least 2 or more years of research experience with sequence analyses, microarray data and genomic databases.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
