  • Bioinformatics Analyst at Dana Farber Cancer Inst/Harvard School of Public Health,

    Job Summary:
The Center for Functional Cancer Epigenetics (CFCE) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is dedicated to the exploration of the key role that epigenetic alterations and abnormal transcriptional regulation play in the development and progression of cancer. A better understanding of these alterations will lead to better diagnosis for cancer and contributions to the knowledge required for the development of new therapeutics and exploiting epigenetic mechanisms. The Center’s organization and leadership represents a very tight coupling between experimental and bioinformatics efforts that provide an unprecedented opportunity to advance the field.
The Bioinformatics Analyst works with the Center Staff and interacts with Principal Investigators, Researchers both within and external to the Center. Responsibilities include analysis of all types of genomic data generated as part of the Center’s projects and the creation of robust reusable software tools that add to the Center’s computational infrastructure. Additional activities may include preparing manuscripts and grant applications.

Specific responsibilities of the candidate include:
    - Use a state-of- the- art bioinformatics platform that will include both collecting and housing the data, and the creation of a biologist-friendly interface and analysis tools to allow the mining of epigenetic data.
    - Interface with projects to analyze the data and develop testable hypotheses that will enable rapid understanding of new biological areas.
    Job Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be collaborative, self-directed and possess the following:
    - A Bachelors or Masters degree in computer science or bioinformatics or related field with at least 2 years professional experience in processing large genome-wide data sets. Experience in epigenetics and transcriptional analysis is a plus.
    - Strong programming capabilities in at least two of the following: Python, Perl, Java, R and C++.
    - Experience in translating data-mining efforts into actionable hypotheses and algorithm design/implementation/testing
    - Multitasking, and capable of setting and reaching goals.
    - Good communication and analytic skills, in interacting with both experimental and computational biologists.

    How to apply:
Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest, CV, and three references (including name and contact information) to xsliu (At) jimmy (Dot) harvard (Dot) edu with subject line “Bioinformatics Analyst”.

    Schedule Full-time, 40 hours

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
