Default PhD Scholarship in Bioinformatics and Genetics at the University of Auckland

In conjunction with the University of Auckland, Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) is offering a 3-year PhD scholarship in the areas of bioinformatics and genetics.

This position will leverage a range of powerful biological datasets, including proprietary data. The data comprises one of Australasia's largest mammalian genome sequence datasets, consisting of 500+ Bos taurus genomes with the generation of additional genome and transcriptome data ongoing. The position will utilise whole genome sequence data in conjunction with extensive pedigree, genotype and phenotype information, aiming to identify functional genetic variants or mutations underlying major biological traits.

To a degree the studentship project can be tailored to fit the student's expertise and interests, though the ideal applicant will have a grounding in a relevant field of molecular biology with demonstrated statistics and bioinformatics programming skills. The LIC PhD Scholarship carries a value of $30,000 NZD tax-free, in addition to the payment of fees and conference travel. Please provide a cover letter stating research interests and a resume with contact information for at least two references to Dr Matt Littlejohn (mlittlejohn@lic.co.nz) or Professor Russell Snell (r.snell@auckland.ac.nz), by the 22nd of March, 2013.

LIC is a premier supplier of improved germplasm, herd testing, and herd information management services to New Zealand dairy farmers, and one of the largest integrated dairy cattle breeding companies in the world. LIC has recently become a co-locator in the Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology (IIB) located in the School of Biological Sciences, The University of Auckland, and the student will be primarily located there.
