  • Bioinformatician High-Throughput Sequencing - Norwegian Sequencing Centre

    The Norwegian Sequencing Centre is the national high-throughput sequencing technology platform in Norway. We are looking for a bioinformatician to join our staff of wet-lab and computer-lab scientists.

    The full text of the advert (in norwegian) can be found on http://tinyurl.com/NSCbioinformatician

    Application deadline is end of June.

    The key points (in english):

    Requirements for the position:
    * Programming skills (preferably with a language for which there are well developed bioinformatic libraries: java, python, perl)
    * Experience with Unix based operating systems (Linux, OSX) and shell scripting
    * Experience with high-throughput sequencing technology and its applications (or at least an interest in the field).
    * An understanding of molecular biology. The position is most likely to suit a qualified bioinformatician, but a candidate with a pure computer science background and a strong interest to acquire the necessary biology skills would also be considered.
    * Self-starter that is able to work independently

    Tasks:
    * delivering sequence data to users of the platform
    * assisting platform users with a wide variety bioinformatic analyses connected to the applications of high-throughput sequencing
    * some system maintenance work

    What we offer:
    * the position is initially for 2 years but there is a possibility that this may be extended
    * the opportunity to work with the latest high-throughput sequencing technologies and applications. The successful candidate will be working on projects using Illumina technology, but the center also has 454 and PacBio sequencing machines and is considering the purchase of other sequencing technologies.
    * a dynamic work environment
    * an engaged and enthusiastic group of scientists
    * a wide variety of projects from fundamental to translational research
    * a good social environment

    Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

    The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

    Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
