  • Postdoc position in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology @ IIGM

    A Postdoc position in Computational Biology is available at the Italian Institute for Genomic Medicine (IIGM) in Turin (IT). The position is in the context of a 5-years funded AIRC grant to Dr Matteo Cereda, and in collaboration with Prof Salvatore Oliviero at IIGM and University of Turin and Prof Jernej Ule at The Francis Crick Institute, London (UK).

    Research. We study the regulation of alternative splicing in cancer, with a strong focus on the role of RNA binding proteins (RBPs). Our research aims at determining the role of RBPs in cancer progression, assessing the mechanisms of RBP abnormal regulation, establishing whether these mechanisms are common to different cancer types, and identifying novel therapeutic targets. To achieve these goals, we will combine genomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic high throughput approaches (e.g. DNA-, RNA-, ChiP-, iCLIP-seq and related methods).

    Role. The post holder will be involved in the analysis and integration of next generation sequencing (NGS) data available at international consortia, and from de- novo sequencing, of hundreds of tumours of different tissues. He/she will contribute to the design of strategies and the development of algorithms to decipher RBP regulation in cancer.

    Candidate. The ideal candidate will have:
    • a PhD in computational biology, computer science, engineering, bioinformatics or similar;
    • experience in bioinformatics analyses, especially in the analysis of NGS experiments;
    • analytical and quantitative background and programming skills.
    • Background in cancer genetics is recommended.

    IIGM is located at the Molecular Biotechnology Center. The institutional goal is to foster and develop excellence in human genomic research and education, with special reference to genomic variability in multifactorial diseases, as cancer. The institute provides high-level scientific education and access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

    Application. To apply for this position please submit a cover letter describing research experience and motivation, CV and contact information of 2/3 references to: [email protected]

    The position is available immediately. Salary will vary according to experience.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

    Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

    Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
