Lightbulb Cleanup and de novo assembly of a 2.9 Gb genome

Hi,

I am a Belgian researcher, working with large Illumina HiSeq paired end genomic datasets (500 Gb, enough for 30x coverage). Anyone with a great idea for sequence cleaning (low quality, vectors) and for assembly (as cheap/free and as low RAM-requiring as possible), just let me know!!
Does anyone think this kind of data could be assembled with Velvet?
Does anyone have experience assembling a very large genome with limited hardware?

cheers,

Stephanie
