New York Genome Center is hiring a head of research computing. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and oversee the strategy and tactics for a world-class scientific computing organization.
Specific Responsibilities:
•Partner with sequencing and informatics leadership and overall management team to assess needs, develop strategic plan, budget, and facilitate the development and maintenance of the necessary hardware and software to support integrated genomics services offerings and next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics research programs;
•Develop and continually update a technical roadmap for high performance computing and data management at the center and articulate that technical vision both to in house staff and to external stakeholders;
•Act as a day-to-day advocate and lead decision making process for IT & research computing within the center;
•Management responsibilities include building and developing a diverse and effective team, planning and delegating work, communicating and monitoring performance expectations, motivating and developing direct reports, and building systems and processes to transition NYGC from startup to full operations mode.
Position Requirements
•10+ years of experience developing, scaling, and managing a large-scale research computing environment;
•Expert knowledge of high-performance and high-throughput computing environments, computational techniques, and computational clusters;
•Understanding of multiple database types; ability to select appropriate data management tools for different applications;
•Proven skills in budget development and management including make-versus-buy decision making and ability to clearly articulate decision criteria;
•Excellent analysis and decision making skills coupled with a willingness to take action; ability to make decisions with incomplete information
•Superior communication skills and ability to navigate an academic or research environment and work collaboratively with individuals at all levels.
