  • Computational Biologist, Metagenomics

The Computational Biologist based within the Genome Sequencing and Analysis Program of the Broad Institute will focus on the analysis of large scale data sets to address the influence of the human associated microbial communities on health and disease risk.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will participate in a dynamic scientific community with a diverse range of scientists on multiple projects and data sets to perform timely and accurate bioinformatic analyses. Duties include: developing and applying computational methods and algorithms for analyzing metagenomic & metatranscriptomic datasets to determine the structure and activity of the human microbiome; interacting with a variety of technical and scientific personnel from the Assembly Analysis and Genome Annotation teams, and with external collaborators to ensure efficient communication and completion of analysis projects; assessing data quality and troubleshooting moderately complex systems and data analysis issues; Organizing and displaying results for presentation and viewing by the scientific community; Documenting analysis procedures and methods for future reference.

    QUALIFICAITONS
We are looking for a Ph.D. in computer science or life sciences with relevant research experience in both disciplines. A strong background in bioinformatics, microbiology, metagenomics and statistics is required, with experience in developing computational methods and algorithms, databases, and study of next-generation sequence data. The candidate should have strong organizational and record keeping skills in data analysis, and effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings, conferences, and in publications.

    HOW TO APPLY
Please apply at www.broadinstitute.org/careers and search by requisition number 313. Please reference you saw the job posting on SEQanswers. We look forward to hearing from you!

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
