  • Register for the Micro B3 Marine Metagenomics Bioinformatics course-deadline 15.01.14

We would like to note that the deadline to register for the "Micro B3 Marine Metagenomics Bioinformatics" course at EBI, Hinxton, UK from
    Monday, March 24, 2014 - Friday, March 28, 2014 is approaching.
More information including the course program can be found here:
We train scientists at all levels to get the most out of publicly available biological data.

Registration is open only until January 15th, 2014.

    Course outline:
This course aims to provide marine biologists, who are embarking upon biodiversity and metagenomics research projects, training to use publicly available resources to manage, share, analyse and interpret amplicon (marker gene) based and metagenomics data. Delegates will gain hands-on practice of using a range of data resources and tools, interspersed with some lectures.
The course will provide an opportunity for discussion of the major challenges in the field, particularly, in preparation of the Micro B3 Ocean Sampling Day in June 2014.

The course is open to everyone who wants to gain experiences in sequence data management and analysis, so please spread the word.

    See you in Hinxton

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
