  • Head of Core Facility Bioinformatics (m/f) CFBH01

The Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) is a Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, and located within the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. The IMB focuses on epigenetics, DNA repair and developmental biology and offers state of the art core facilities covering genomics, cytometry, proteomics, histology and microscopy, with bioinformatics connecting facilities and departments (http://www.imb-mainz.de/core-facilities/). The Core Facility Bioinformatics supports researchers in performing data processing, basic analyses and high-level collaborations, as well as by providing infrastructure, teaching and consulting. We are looking for a Head of Core Facility Bioinformatics (m/f) to join our team.

    You will:
    • Lead the Core Facility Bioinformatics, coordinate and organize a team of bioinformaticians and IT specialists
    • Be responsible for long-term strategies for compute and storage hardware and analysis software solutions for the Core Facility Bioinformatics
    • Analyse data generated by high throughput technologies, especially from next-generation sequencing
    • Consult scientists on the analysis of data, experimental planning, data validation and functional analysis and provide support for grant applications
    • Collaborate with our scientists on several projects in parallel
    • Assess existing and develop new data analysis methods for high-throughput data
    • Develop and maintain data analysis pipelines and infrastructure
    • Train users in bioinformatics and statistics

    Required qualifications:
    • PhD in a quantitative discipline (e.g. mathematics, physics, statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology)
    • Strong organisational as well as communication skills
    • Experience in team leadership
    • Experience in project management
    • Several years of postdoc, core facility or industry experience in the analysis of high-throughput genomics data
    • A track record of successful interdisciplinary collaborations with biologists proven by peer-reviewed publications
    • Sound knowledge of statistics and R/Bioconductor, in-depth programming skills, at least one language (Perl, Python, Java, C++,...) and familiarity with Linux/Unix
    • Interest to acquire in-depth knowledge about biological processes
    • Proficiency in written and spoken English

    Desirable qualifications:
    • Experience with queuing systems (LSF)
    • Experience in the design of robust analysis pipelines

    We offer:
    • The opportunity to shape a state of the art core facility for bioinformatics
    • Research in a competitive and dynamic international environment
    • Advanced training opportunities
    • A competitive salary
    • Favourable pension scheme

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
