  • Research Assistant-Max Planck Institute Freiburg

The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany, invites applications for the position of a:
    Research Assistant
to support our deep-sequencing facility and a sequencing unit. The position is available immediately for an initial period of two years. We currently have a Genome Analyzer (Illumina) that generates genome-wide data for many projects at the institute, with a particular focus on epigenetic questions.
We are looking for motivated team players with strong communication skills and the desire to work in a dynamic environment. The successful applicant will have a good understanding of molecular biology and the ability to perform high quality analyses in a responsible and independent manner. Candidates with prior experience in the operation of a deep-sequencing facility or other high-throughput techniques are strongly preferred.
    Qualifications:
    - education in a biological science or a related field
    - previous experience with lab work
    - good knowledge of molecular biology techniques
    - good oral and written communication skills in English
    Tasks:
    - organize, schedule, and monitor sequencing projects
    - sample preparation and quality control
    - consult and train colleagues
Salaries will be according to fellowships of the Max-Planck-Society or TVöD and will commensurate with experience. A childcare facility is directly attached to the institute. Handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in areas, where they are underrepresented, and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
Candidates should send their applications indicating the reference number 010511 via e-mail to Ms. Klank at [email protected] or to the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics, Personnel Department, Stübeweg 51, 79108 Freiburg.
Deadline for applications is June 1, 2011.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
